Most common treatment for dental caries are following:

PULPECTOMY

It is a root canal procedure for pulp tissue  infected irreversibly or necrotic as a result of caries or traumatic injury. X-rays are taken to look for any infection in surrounding structure and to check the morphology of tooth. It is done under local anesthesia. It may need 2 to 3 visits of  30 to 40 mins for each session.  A hole is drilled, fine instruments are used to remove all the dead and necrotic pulp from the crown and root portion of tooth. It is then cleaned, disinfected and prepared for filling with material that can be reabsorbed by the body.

PULPOTOMY

Pulpotomy is done to save decayed infected tooth, coronal part of pulp is removed and replaced with medicated fillings. It is minimally invasive procedure to perform on child’s primary teeth with extensive caries without evidence of root pathology. This procedure usually doesn’t need local anesthesia and takes 20 min.  to 30 min.

PULP CAPPING

Pulp capping is done to prevent infection of the exposed or nearly exposed dental pulp due to caries or trauma. All the soft carious infected lesion are scooped by  fine hand instruments. Medicament or cavity liner is placed over residual caries or pulp to maintain the vitality of tooth and  to avoid more extensive treatment. Temporary cement is placed on top of medicament and left for 6 to 8 weeks. If child does not complain of any pain than permanent filling is done after 8 weeks.
